New Hampshire House

Designed for a physician and his family in a beautiful woodland area of New Hampshire, the Badger House was designed to take advantage of mountain views to the north and west while making the most of the good solar access to the south.

The client’s vision for their home included integration of structure and site, ideas of an open plan that still had well-defined rooms, and an interest in Japanese architecture. The final design has translated the clients’ vision into a project that meets their restricted budget and is achievable within the confines of a New Hampshire building season.

The house nestles into the site and draws sunlight across the rooms that are defined in plan but open to one another by way of views and volume. The stepped plan establishes a series of realms within the house: a social realm on the main floor; a half level up is the more private realm including the main bathroom with a Japanese soaking tub and a master suite with a tatami room; at the top is the children’s realm with three bedrooms, a shared bathroom and a play area overlooking the kitchen.
